Making the most out of the Windows Mobile Experience

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

If you so happen to own a Windows Mobile phone or played with one before, there are likely to be many things that you find rather terrible about it. What with the iPhone, Android and Palm, it’s no surprise that Windows Mobile deserves to be shunned to a shameful corner in the market. However what most people don’t know is that the Windows Mobile team seems to be getting their gear together and is doing some major upgrades for the next iteration of their platform – Windows Mobile 7. Though it still lacks in many ways, it’s definitely a move forward.

Many people on the Windows Mobile platform are not making the most of it – they aren’t using a smartphone as a smartphone. Through this article I hope to touch up on some of the ways your phone could be used.

Improve the overall experience

Before you start trying to use your phone for tasks, you might want to make your phone more usable first. Windows Mobile was designed for a stylus and envisioned as a minature desktop – something that really makes it a terrible OS to use. Windows seems to have made touch-friendliness its main target for improvement and these upgrades are available for all users, without having to buy a whole new phone. However you’d have to search quite a bit, (I recommend the XDA community) to find something that really clicks – meanwhile this introductory article should help.

Flash a newer ROM

This is the equivalent of upgrading your operating system. I wrote a review of it here but development has already progressed much further than those screenshots display. Windows Mobile seems to aim to challenge the likes of the iPhone with its WM7 version coming apparently in Q4 of 2010. With this aim and the rapid ongoing development it’s hard not to expect greater things in the future. Even though it’s not out yet learning how to flash a ROM will grant you access to the ongoing development – and of course making your experience a lot, lot better. I would go so far to say that even 6.5 on my aging Dopod’s hardware (popular name HTC Hermes) is fast, and really makes the device a joy to use (yes, quite shockingly the newer ones are less resource hungry!).

Get started and learn about flashing ROMs in the XDA-Forums. Highly recommended.

Theme it properly

Whether you have flashed a recent ROM or preferred to keep your old one (I recommend flashing), a theme will do wonders. There are already themes for WM6.5 and can really sharpen up the phone in no time. A good wallpaper, colourscheme and not to forget icons too can spice things up. If you are using shells or widgets then finding matching skins for those will help give your system an integrated feel.

Themes can be found on the XDA-Forums as linked above, as well as on FreewarePocketPC.

Use a Shell/Widget/Plugin for the Today screen

For those already with WM6.5, it comes with Titanium and that is a huge improvement from the today screen, giving you quick access to pretty much all of the phones functions outside individual applications right on the front screen. However many other interfaces are available (most are crap) and some are really quite something, such as SPB Mobile Shell (pictured), TouchFlo/Manilla (2D or 3D), Home2, and various today plugins (available on FreewarePocketPC).

Ensure the basics exist

Make sure that you’ve got the basic set of applications – Windows (Live) Messenger, Windows Media Player, Office Mobile (including OneNote?), and … wait for it … Windows Marketplace and Microsoft MyPhone. This basic set of application should come with every phone and if you didn’t get it, you should hunt it down. Windows Marketplace is Microsoft’s attempt at the iPhone’s App store and Google’s Android Market. It was quite recently released (and even more recently cracked and available for free on XDA) and though I’ve only seen very few applications available on it (and even fewer free ones) it’s been a joy to browse and no doubt has a lot of potential once more developers add their stuff. Microsoft MyPhone is a new service to bridge mobile and web synchronisation. It’s quite nifty allowing two-way synchronising for SMSes, contacts, calendars and todos – all accessible through a web interface. It also allows synchronisation with social networks (though Microsoft’s Facebook application is very good) as well as synchronisation between several devices. Some of it’s “pro account” features involve phone tracking and remote phone lockdowns,

In my next post on this topic I will start going through specific uses and my recommended applications for that use. But taking those first easy steps can really make a difference.

Blender Model Repository system upgraded

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Today I just wanted to say that I finally got around to upgrading the system behind the Blender Model Repository. The BMR runs on the Xoops CMS and I can’t say it’s the best CMS I’ve seen. It’s a good many versions out of date and has been in need of an upgrade for quite a while.

Recently we’ve been under attack by some rather pesky bots and even hacking attempts. I don’t condone hacking (unless it’s authorised stress-testing) and feel quite sad that some people would even consider trying to break into a harmless community supporting website.

There were several options for an upgrade, including a fresh install with a manual import, or perhaps just an overwrite of all the valuable files, but in the end it turns out the developers behind Xoops cared about backward compatibility and provided a guide for dealing with such situations.

During the upgrade process, and even when monitoring those would-be intruders I would like to highlight my host, OpticEmpire – their stunning customer service, personable support and hilarious working hours leave little to be desired. If you need a website host, I would recommend them.

Needless to say we are up to date again and I’ve got some upcoming plans for the BMR – but I think I’d better get Eadrax ship-shape first.

Now officially vulnerable to muscle aches! Oh, and WordPress 2.7.

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Oh joy! I get an excuse to talk about something else other than tech for a while. For the past few days, my skin seems to have been plagued with what resembles a nasty case of chicken pox, except that it’s restricted to certain regions, such as my hands (like I’m wearing weird lumpy gloves), my back, my feet, and occasionally popping up on my thighs. In addition to that, my lips have managed to achieve a stunning level of dryness and chap(piness?), as well as maintain a constant bleeding throughout the day. Seriously, how do you do that in a tropical country where skyjuice is plentiful? I snapped a picture of it whilst on the way to a charity fun fair this morning, of which I won’t mention details about. (oh, the picture doesn’t do its bark-like quality with oozing blood any justice. In fact, it makes it look redder than it really is – should be brown. Shame.)

It’s all a bit nasty and I wasn’t quite sure what caused it until a visit to the clinic this morning. Because it’s not exactly the smartest thing to announce “hey guys, here are my medical records, look how cool they are!” online, the most I can say is that I pretty much don’t like any sort of painkiller that exists. So any future muscle aches that occur … well, I’ll just have to sit it out and endure. Funnily enough, I actually had a dream about a week ago that I would get this sort of allergic reaction. It seems to have come pretty realistically true. Right down to the minute details of which figure would be the most swollen with lumps. On other news, I will be flying off to the U.K. on Thursday, but don’t expect that to curb the flow of creative blog posts (this one exempted), as I’ve got quite a bit to show.

On other news, I’ve just upgraded to WordPress 2.7. However, this isn’t just any upgrade, it’s an awesome upgrade. That’s because I now get a cooler backend for managing thinkMoult. The whole design looks all beefed and faster to access stuff. Take a look if you don’t believe me:

Along with the upgrade, the flash upload now works again for me (no more tedious click, upload, reload, click), as well as new thumbnail sizes for adding images … there are probably a lot of new features I haven’t noticed yet, but all the same, I’m excited. It’s a new toy, it’s a new thang, it’s awesome.

Rethinking my post, it probably wasn’t a good idea to mix sickness and software together.

WordPress 2.6.5

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Well, it seems as though version 2.6.4 has – well, quite literally been scrapped and the developers have skipped right on to 2.6.5. I’m up to date, and again using it as an excuse to take up a post on my writing schedule. For want of something more interesting to talk about, apparently Mr. Stallman himself (I mean, nobody would ever do identity theft online, right?) has heard about my public accusation of his singing abilities being the cause of the slow progress on open-source, and decided that I’m correct. You can see proof of this on the post “Cause of the Open-Source Lag” itself, as well as grab a chance to listen to *choke* … a wonderful song.

Oh, and to make this post have some sort of interesting content, here’s a scrot of my new computer’s desktop, running KDE (4 series), all freshly personalised (still unfinished though). Again, click on it to get the full resolution image (Yes! No longer 1024×768, now it’s 1280×800!)

Wordpress Updated

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

As usual, I’m about two versions behind. (2.6.1) I’ve decided to stop procrastinating and upgrade WordPress. Happy to say it was flawless and we’re now running on 2.6.3.

(Wow great excuse to use up a whole post – don’t worry I’ve got stuff in store)

Tada! 2.6.1!

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

I’ve just upgraded the WordPress version to 2.6.1. Taaa daaaa!
