I like dabbling in web development and design and so I was quite happy to be able to participate in the redesign of the new KDE.org website due to release in conjunction with KDE SC 4.4 on February 9th. This was what I was working on during the past week and I must say I’ve learned and experienced quite a lot from trying to contribute.
So every day, including today, I will release an image showing stages in the process of creating the KDE webdesign mockup. They can be found in a newly setup WIPUP project, which can be seen in full at my WIPUP profile.
Today we start off with the original mockup (not done by me) from a user with the alias it-s. Have a peek.

I don’t KDE4 because it’s not as good/stable as 3.5 was. I don’t like the new website design because it wastes a lot of space for the empty header; frankly just makes it different, not better in anyway, then the current KDE site (which suffers from being artificially constraint width wise).
g, I personally didn’t like this new website design either. Perhaps throughout the next few days the screenshots I release will show improvement and I’d love to hear your feedback.
Well, let’s not be overly critical here. Of course, the header is way too large, and the black on blue in the footer doesn’t seem to work too well for my taste, but al in all, the way the thing seems to be going feels much sleeker than the old site. Here’s hoping that it’s just an alpha sketch and the design develops until the 9th.
Joe Doe (John?) I will be releasing a development of this design every day until the release.
First of all, thanks for your work Dion.
Second, I think the design concept is not bad but there’s a lot of space wasted and some areas readability could be improved.
